Mermaid of the Infinite Ocean - Sylvia Earle
About 90% of the fish and aquatic life that we
catch from the sea for food, about 50% of the coral reef, and much more
beautiful and important marine biodiversity have been destroyed today. A very
large amount of plastic is settled in the global ocean. As Social and Civilized
living beings we are doing a lot of evil and harmful things to the environment.
But in these challenging times, a mermaid has been studying the ocean for the
last 4 decades. This is the story of her and her obsession with the sea.
This crazy journey began in 1953 when our country, India, had just been liberated
from slavery. The whole world was competing to set foot on the moon. But then
she jumps into the sea for the first time. Take a closer look at the ocean and
then a crazy journey begins. She constantly goes deeper into the ocean and
build-up a healthy friendship with the ocean. About 99% of the oceans are
completely open to us today, so we have to do something about it. Something we
have to do with it today is to throw plastic waste into it, to collect marine
minerals, to catch fish, and to just roll in its wet sand and have fun; everyone
has equal rights and Freedom. She makes
her decision and decides to understand this ocean more and explain it to
everyone. This endeavor marks the beginning of a sea discovery journey and the
birth of an organization called "Deep Search" which begins the search
for an unknown marine habitat in the deepest depths of the ocean. In this
journey, she discovers some wonderful sea creatures and their mysterious
behavior.
In her
own words, today we have done a lot of damage to this ocean and its marine
habitat. Today, in large restaurants, seafood, which is mainly at the top of
the food chain, is our favorite food, such as tuna, and as a result, we have
largely upset the balance of marine life. Increasing carbon dioxide and other
toxic gases in the atmosphere are causing seawater to become more acidic (ocean
acidification). Is happening and they are becoming even more fragile. Sea
corals are one of the most useful and biodiversity-rich habitats on Earth, with
more than 50% of the corals now extinct. Rising temperatures are melting
glaciers and ice on the Arctic and Antarctic poles, affecting the habitat of
polar bears and penguins. Increasingly modern fishing and trawlers and modern
fishing boats are draining the sea. If we look at the world fisheries and
fisheries statistics today, we will understand that we are destroying a large
number of marine fish. If you understand this biggest result, you will find
that your ancestors and the fishing you do today are getting smaller and
smaller in size, as well as some of the fish that used to be found on the
shores of the Gulf are now either reduced or caught. Now you have to go deeper
into the sea. Due to the type of fishing like Longline, a large number of
unwanted marine life are being killed in the sea today.
Accepting the 2009 TED award, Sylvia conveys the message to the world
that where there is water, there is life, and if there is an ocean, there is
life on earth. If you want to pass on this oceanic wealth to your next
generation, today is the right time. What can we do to improve the condition of
the ocean? Convincing more and more people about small things like less plastic
waste and proper planning of plastic waste, fellow traditional fishing
practices, talk and share information about marine fish and marine habitats.
We are
alive today because of the oxygen we get today from plankton-like creatures and
marine plants in the oceans. Because the oxygen we are getting today is what we
get from this sea. So, it doesn't matter where the beach is or where the
distant valleys are.
The inspiration for writing this article was to share this kind of dedicated life
work by my favorite oceanographer. At this event of ‘International woman days’
my best wishes to all
our powerful Researchers like Sylvia Earle. If
this article strengthens everyone's relationship with the sea, then this
article will be a success. Don't forget to leave your feedback on pradipnc93@gmail.com.
Happy International Women’s Day
